Microfilm and microfiche are stiley widely used as an archive medium. However, inproper storage and handling can cause accelerated degradation and over time can render the imaged unusable.
Linear search methods can also make locating images a lengthy and fatiguing process. Searching through microfilm could be likened to looking for a particular track on cassette tape rather than being able to go straight to a track on a compact disc.
Scanning microfilm and microfiche in to digital media provides these benefits of instant retrieval, safe back up and easy duplication and so prolonging the life of the information.
Digital data can be easily and cheaply copied repeatedly without losing any 'generations', which may otherwise cause degradation.
